The red-belted conk, also known as Fomitopsis pinicola, is a bracket fungus with a variety of medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties.
We add this amazing mushroom to our Ötzi healing salve and it's simply a magical balm for sore muscles and injured skin!
Here is an overview of what medicinal properties these conks offer:
Anti-inflammatory: A daily dose of 30 mg is said to be an effective anti-inflammatory
Anti-cancer: Some animal model studies have shown that the red-belted conk may have anti-cancer potential
Anti-diabetic: The red-belted conk is said to help regulate blood sugar
Digestive tonic: The red-belted conk is considered a digestive tonic and is thought to relieve inflammation of the gastrointestinal tissues
Immune system stimulation: The red-belted conk is said to stimulate the immune system
Antihistamine: The red-belted conk is said to have antihistamine qualities
Styptic: The Cree Natives use the red-belted conk as a styptic to stop bleeding
The red-belted conk is so tough it's almost inedible in its natural state and has a fibrous texture similar to press board. However, when chopped up fresh, then dried and powdered the sky's the limit to its uses!
In a wilderness emergency some say when an old conk is found (it's dry, grey, and light weight) that it can be used as tinder for a fire.
